Caryn joined Baldwins as an associate in August 2006. Caryn works primarily in the areas of patents and specialises in drafting and prosecution of patent specifications, providing patent validity and infringement advice, conducting due diligence, and advising on intellectual property strategy and development for worldwide markets.

Expertise

Caryn's area of expertise is in biotechnology and pharmaceutical patents. Her doctoral research focused on a nuclear envelope component required for nuclear protein import, messenger RNA export, and normal nuclear morphology in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. As part of her postdoctoral research, Caryn developed an in vivo nuclear protein export assay to identify a novel yeast nuclear shuttling factor and to study the HIV-1 matrix protein.
Caryn has been a US patent specialist since 1999, working with New York law firms. She is qualified as a US patent attorney and is currently training for registration as a New Zealand patent attorney.
