2019 KiwiNet Research Commercialisation Awards Evening

The KiwiNet Research Commercialisation Awards celebrate successful commercialisation of research within New Zealand’s universities and Crown Research Institutes, bringing together the innovators and change makers that are transforming scientific discoveries into new products and services.



Winners of the seventh annual KiwiNet awards were announced on Wednesday, 7th August 2019. Baldwins is proud to be a major partner of KiwiNet since 2017, supporting research commercialisation in New Zealand by providing intellectual property advice to KiwiNet members.
 

The 2019 KiwiNet Research Commercialisation Awards winners are:

Norman Barry Foundation Breakthrough Innovator Award

  • Dr Shalen Kumar, AuramerBio: Precision diagnostics made faster, cheaper, and mobile

Baldwins Researcher Entrepreneur Award

  • Distinguished Professor Dame Margaret Brimble, University of Auckland: Pioneering drug discovery and development

MinterEllisonRuddWatts Commercialisation Professional Award

  • Will Charles, Auckland UniServices at University of Auckland: Supercharging the commercialisation activities of the University of Auckland

PwC Commercial Impact Award

  • Plant & Food Research and Compac Sorting Equipment: World-leading fruit grading and sorting technologies

Momentum Student Entrepreneur Award

  • Cynthia Hunefeld, Victoria University of Wellington: HerbScience, evidence-based nutraceuticals and integrative medicine

BNZ Supreme Award

  • Distinguished Professor Dame Margaret Brimble, University of Auckland: Pioneering drug discovery and development

 

The Baldwins Researcher entrepreneur award recognises an entrepreneurial researcher who has made outstanding contributions to business innovation or has created innovative business in New Zealand.

Covener of the KiwiNet Awards 2019 judging panel, Duncan Mackintosh, an Investment Manager at Brandon Capital Partners described Dame Margaret Brimble as: “a researcher who set out to change the world”. He says: “In a space that New Zealand has long considered to be too hard, too high risk, too long term, too expensive, Margaret’s pipeline of drug discoveries proves that stamina, persistence and sheer brilliance do win out in the end.”

Kiwi Innovation Network (KiwiNet) is NZ’s network of public research organisations, established to boost commercial outcomes from publicly funded research by helping transform scientific discoveries into marketable products and services.
