Baldwins’ client turns up the heat: LanzaTech voted hottest company in bioenergy
Thursday 20th November 2014
LanzaTech has been voted No.1 in the Biofuels Digest 2014-15 “Hottest Companies in Bioenergy” rankings. The New Zealand-founded company also secured the No. 5 spot in the “Renewable Chemicals and Materials” category, making LanzaTech one of only 5 companies in the world to secure a top 10 spot on both lists.
Biofuels Digest is the world’s most widely-read biofuels daily. It’s annual rankings recognise innovation and achievement in fuels and integrated bio-refinery development. The rankings are calculated based on votes from a specialist selectors panel (50%) and on votes from subscribers (50%). Overall, more than 100,000 individual company ratings were received from panellists and voters for this year’s lists.
LanzaTech was ranked No.2 in last year’s poll. Its progression to the top spot is evidence of the ripples the company is creating within the biofuels industry. Earlier this year LanzaTech, now head-quartered in the United States, completed a capital raising of over NZ$70m to further develop its gas-fermentation platform.
LanzaTech’s core technology involves taking waste gases from large industrial operations such as steel mills and converting them via fermentation into low carbon fuels and high value chemicals. The fermentation process utilises proprietary microbes that convert carbon monoxide into fuels such as ethanol.
By using waste gases instead of food (for example sugarcane or corn), LanzaTech’s fermentation technology provides a sustainable, low-cost, low carbon fuel production process with no impact on the availability of food or land.
