Inventive Young Kiwis: Baldwins hosts students from Rongomai Primary School

Tuesday 25th August 2015

Baldwins recently hosted a group of students from Rongomai primary school based in Auckland, New Zealand. The students have been working, with guidance from their teacher, Mr. Pattison and experts from Landcare Research and Fisher & Paykel Applicances, to design devices that can be used in the monitoring of streams for Kauri Die-back (PTA) – a disease that is damaging native Kauri tree forests in New Zealand. They have come up with an improved device which will be placed in rivers for monitoring PTA.

The students spent some time with John Foulkes, a member of Baldwins’ mechanical and electrical patents team, as well as Chief Executive, Mike Spraggon. The students described their Kauri Catcher™ and their invention process with John and talked about the basics of intellectual property law and how it could apply to their Kauri Catcher™.  John discussed the types of protection available and showed examples of copied products.

The visit also included a tour of Baldwins’ Auckland office including meeting trade mark, patent, IT and library staff members.  Thank you to Rongomai Primary School for visiting Baldwins. It was wonderful to host such an enthusiastic group of young students.

Further information about the Rongomai Kauri Catcher™ is available from the Rongomai Primary School blog:
